The Aqua Club at The Headland Hotel Completion

A luxurious swimming and wellbeing centre on the Cornish coast

We are extremely proud to share with you the greatly anticipated, Aqua Club at The Headland Hotel, the Southwest’s most luxurious swimming and wellbeing centre.

Aqua Platinum Projects have designed and built the multi-million-pound project that includes a total of six pools including a 25-metre lap pool, an indoor vitality pool, children’s pool complete with jets, air pads and water mushroom, a traditional sauna with a curved glass front, outdoor vitality pool and sunset spa pool, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

This facility marks the completion of a further phase in an ambitious programme of development at The Headland, which is celebrating the 40 years under the ownership of John and Carolyn Armstrong.

Framing the gorgeous Cornish waterfront

Aqua Platinum have worked closely with architects Lilly Lewarne for the past four years, to design and build these world-class facilities for the hotel. It has been an important factor to incorporate the gorgeous Cornish waterfront throughout the design and we have done so by including a ‘wavy’ wall in the lap pool and a beautiful, hybrid, heated edge pool that circles the sunset spa pool that frames the idyllic waterfront. Whilst the outdoor vitality pool is complete with a Cornish granite menhir, this will enable guests to immerse themselves in the beautiful surroundings and relax while taking in the stunning Atlantic views.

The Aqua club is located on land between The Headland Hotel and its cottages. Building of the 2,215 square metre club started in October 2017 and is now open to hotel guests.

The plantroom is over 260 square meters and includes state-of-the-art filtration equipment. The six swimming pools boast the highest specification filtration and water treatment available including pumps and filters from our trusted supplier Waterco and UV water treatment from Triogen.

1000’s of man-hours and continued commitment from the team have resulted in the successful delivery of this project. We would like to thank every single member of the team who helped to deliver this project, all our valued suppliers and JE Stacey who have been a pleasure to work with and we look forward to working together on future projects.

Swimming Pool Refurbishments

Aqua Platinum Projects have recently undertaken an extensive swimming pool refurbishment for an exclusive client in Hertfordshire. The house is an outstanding period family home with fabulous views within grounds approaching 16 acres.

Set towards the northern boundary is the outdoor swimming pool, where APP has undertaken the remedial works to remove all pool surround tiles and re-tile. APP has also tiled the band of mosaics to the top of the pool edge and acid washed the swimming pool to remove any stubborn stains to the pool surface.

APP has undertaken the replacement of all lighting to LED lighting and electrics and removed and re-installed state-of-the-art filtration equipment, providing a four-hour complete water turnover.

In addition, APP has installed a fully automatic swimming pool safety cover that runs along tracks and locks the pool shut when engaged. The swimming pool refurbishment was complete in a matter of weeks so that our client has been able to enjoy their newly renovated swimming pool in time for summer.

How to heat a swimming pool

Investing in your comfort by means of adding warmth to your swimming pool can bring you a huge amount of satisfaction. Essentially, heating your swimming pool will prolong the period you can enjoy your pool and this extends far into the cooler months.

Depending on the pool and your requirements, it may be a simple process to add heating to your swimming pool. If this isn’t possible a more complex procedure may be needed. Using an air/ground source heat pump can be cost-effective and allow you to use your pool all year round without the additional running costs of an oil or gas boiler. A more detailed approach to heat your indoor basement swimming pool would require a heat exchanger, AHU and ducting. Here at Aqua Platinum Projects, we can assist with any heating requirements big or small. Find out some of the best and proven methods to heat your swimming pool below.

The different ways pools are heated

Once upon a time a question such as how to heat a swimming pool would only be asked by the affluent. Heating a swimming pool was seen as a luxury, however, with the improvements in modern technologies, heating is today regarded as an integral part of any swimming pool system.

How to heat an outdoor swimming pool?

The typical way in which to heat a residential outdoor swimming pool would be an air source heat pump. Heat pumps work by moving the water into the heat pump via the filtration system. Essentially the process is similar to the way a refrigerator works, heat is drawn from the environment surrounding the heat pump which is then turned into heat for your pool. Using a heat pump is highly efficient, economical, easy to use, durable and environmentally friendly. A heat pump uses electricity to extract heat from the outside air and distributes it into the water.

How to heat an indoor swimming pool?

The heating of an indoor pool involves a more in-depth design as we introduce environmental controls and ducting which reduces condensation and introduces fresh air to control the humidity of the environment. A swimming pool heat exchanger allows heat from one fluid that then passes to a second fluid. This ensures the two fluids do not mix together or come into direct contact. The essential principle of a heat exchanger is that it transfers the heat without transferring the fluid that carries the heat. Heat exchangers and systems offer an energy-efficient and economical solution to maintain near-constant year-round water temperature in swimming pools.

How much does it cost to heat a swimming pool?

This is a question we commonly get asked, unfortunately, there isn’t a simple answer; there are so many variables that it is impossible to give a definitive answer. How much it costs to heat a swimming pool depends very much on what type of heater you have to the size and environment your pool is in. We estimate running costs for an indoor pool would be around £2,500 – £3,000 and an outdoor pool would be around £4,000 depending on pool water temp, air temp, surface area/volume of the pool and how long it is covered/uncovered.

The heating of a swimming pool – step by step

The selection of the heat exchanger should be based on the volume of the water. It must be large enough to heat the pool water to the desired temperature, but not be too large so it heats the water too quickly and causes an issue with the concrete shell.

The flow temperature of the primary heating should be known before selecting the exchanger to ensure you get the correct heat transfer.

When installing the secondary and primary pipework, they should be installed to create a cross-flow through the exchanger, this will maximise the heat contact and allow a more efficient heat transfer.

Both the primary and secondary pipe systems should have a commissioning set to allow the flows through both pipes to be checked and balanced in order to follow the manufacturer’s specifications.

On the pipework in preparation for the heat exchanger being installed, a temperature sensor will be installed that reads the true temperature of the pool water. This will control a 2 or 3 port valve on the primary side to allow the LPHW (Low Pressure Hot Water) to flow around the heat exchanger to begin the heat transfer.

Once the desired temperature is reached, the temperature sensor will allow the 2 or 3 port valve to close and stop the heat transfer.

Mumbai – Design Contract Announcement

We are delighted to announce we have been awarded the design contract for a private client located in Mumbai. The project will include a bespoke rooftop jacuzzi for the residents to enjoy during the stunning Indian sunsets celebrating the view of the Arabian Sea.

In addition to this, we are designing a 10m swimming pool with a falling infinity edge as well as including a counter-current system that welcomes the seamless integration of the interior and exterior spaces.

We have begun building our relationship and working closely with architects, Design Matrix Interiors. Located in Mumbai, Design Matrix Interiors have executed projects in more than 80 cities in India offering full turnkey solutions.

The project will require full filtration within both plantrooms for the pool and spa which will be on separate filtration systems, these have been fully designed by APP.

This has been a challenging process for our in-house Designers considering the location of the spa, which will be on the rooftop of the Mumbai townhouse and exposed to the outdoor environment of Indian heat, sea, salt, and sand. Both plantrooms will include the highest quality UV systems and fully automatic dosing equipment to sustain the warm environment.

Within the basement APP will be responsible for designing the pool hall environmental system, using state-of-the-art technology to ensure that a cool and comfortable environment is created for our client to swim in.

We are looking forward to expanding our work to Mumbai, into Europe and the Middle East with our Dubai office set to open in late 2019.
